Lord of the Rings has been a real joy for me。 Frodo's must destroy the one ring of the dark lord。 He is taken on a adventure across the realm of middle earth。The epic war against orks。 The battle between good and evil wizards。The evil twisted gollum who wants the ring。Its powers have demented him。From films to video games to action figures。The franchise is one of fantasy adventure。Like dungeons and dragons or pathfinder。Alot of fun to be in a land with friends。Outside or in mystic environment。Ad Lord of the Rings has been a real joy for me。 Frodo's must destroy the one ring of the dark lord。 He is taken on a adventure across the realm of middle earth。The epic war against orks。 The battle between good and evil wizards。The evil twisted gollum who wants the ring。Its powers have demented him。From films to video games to action figures。The franchise is one of fantasy adventure。Like dungeons and dragons or pathfinder。Alot of fun to be in a land with friends。Outside or in mystic environment。Adventure or romance。Killing and Fucking。 。。。more

The Hobbit was amazing, but too much world-building and not enough action in the others。

This is the book that started it all for me。 It's just such a thoroughly produced fantasy world where everything fantastical is well and truly realised。 Where the heroes are modest and righteous and the bad guys deserve all they get。 Just like real life!? Put together, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings make for an odd couple。 The former is a relatively breezy children's novel while the latter is an epic tome。 Consistency is rather lacking as it's very clear that putting them in the same universe was rather an afterthought。 Still, the amount of effort put into constructing this universe and drawing from many sources and mythologies is very impressive。 It definitely feels like an expansive, living place with lots of complexity and history。 Possi Put together, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings make for an odd couple。 The former is a relatively breezy children's novel while the latter is an epic tome。 Consistency is rather lacking as it's very clear that putting them in the same universe was rather an afterthought。 Still, the amount of effort put into constructing this universe and drawing from many sources and mythologies is very impressive。 It definitely feels like an expansive, living place with lots of complexity and history。 Possibly a bit too much - the fault of The Lord of the Rings is that it's unnecessarily verbose for the sake of showing off all the planning Tolkien put in。 Many parts are an exercise in patience as he spends pages describing trivial topographic elements like valleys, trees and rocks。 The characters will mention that it's not just any tree, it's a special tree with its own name, and start singing a very long song detailing the last three hundred years of history of that special tree and listing everyone who ever saw it。 Then it will never be mentioned again。 Some of these details overflow into the appendices which were clumsily added and should have been integrated better into the main story。Apart from the universe and backstory, the core story is about the many interlocking characters and the brave quest they set out on, in order to defeat the rather one-dimensional villain Sauron。 The Fellowship all have their own distinct personalities and contributions to the quest which covers many locations and battles, all culminating in an incredible finale。There's too much for me to comment on in particular, but overall Tolkien's works form a truly epic universe with exciting quests, though it is overdone at times。 。。。more

These 4 books (the Hobbit and LOTR) were all read to me, and my family, by my Dad after meals。 I later re-read them on my own during my mid-late teens。 I think I re-read them a third time in my mid-20's。 I hope to re-read them again at some point, hopefully one day even being able to read them to my own children/family。 These 4 books (the Hobbit and LOTR) were all read to me, and my family, by my Dad after meals。 I later re-read them on my own during my mid-late teens。 I think I re-read them a third time in my mid-20's。 I hope to re-read them again at some point, hopefully one day even being able to read them to my own children/family。 。。。more

After a false start reading LOTR in college, I finally (at near retirement age) just read it all the way through。 This classic, complex story certainly deserves five stars for structure, character development, and overall storytelling。 But since it's not my favorite genre, I have to go with four stars, because "I really liked it。" Still, I would add a half-star, if I could。 After a false start reading LOTR in college, I finally (at near retirement age) just read it all the way through。 This classic, complex story certainly deserves five stars for structure, character development, and overall storytelling。 But since it's not my favorite genre, I have to go with four stars, because "I really liked it。" Still, I would add a half-star, if I could。 。。。more

One of the best series ever!!!!

shapeofaflyingdeer

Incomparably volkish。 All characters are devolped fairly or the 'the whole is greater than the sum of the parts' aspect of the book largely resides in it's handling of 'equal attention being paid to each character'。 So this is not obvious done (and yet is obviously done)。 Also there is the nod to earth, air, fire, and water and their practicalities。 All the works including The Silmarrillion and The Tale of Years stir such longing that it feels like we have lost something real。 Incomparably volkish。 All characters are devolped fairly or the 'the whole is greater than the sum of the parts' aspect of the book largely resides in it's handling of 'equal attention being paid to each character'。 So this is not obvious done (and yet is obviously done)。 Also there is the nod to earth, air, fire, and water and their practicalities。 All the works including The Silmarrillion and The Tale of Years stir such longing that it feels like we have lost something real。 。。。more

I was born in the wrong time gap to really be aware of anything "lord of the rings" like。Is wasn't going to watch the movies。 But my cousin made me。 He was right。 I spent the next year reading all 3 between raising 3 kids under 8 and going to college。They are a wonderful creative dark story。Some chapters drag from over deceptions reporting scenic thing。And I find it actually scarier in the book then the movie when Frodo , (and then with friends) are being persued thru the Shire by the Black ride I was born in the wrong time gap to really be aware of anything "lord of the rings" like。Is wasn't going to watch the movies。 But my cousin made me。 He was right。 I spent the next year reading all 3 between raising 3 kids under 8 and going to college。They are a wonderful creative dark story。Some chapters drag from over deceptions reporting scenic thing。And I find it actually scarier in the book then the movie when Frodo , (and then with friends) are being persued thru the Shire by the Black riders。 It is worrisome if not scary。Love them 。。。more
